Rarity, Extinction Risk, and Beta Diversity of Native Bees in the Atlantic Forest Biodiversity Hotspot- dataset

This dataset supports the study investigating ecological rarity, extinction risk, and beta diversity patterns of native bee communities across the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, one of the world’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots. The dataset comprises information on 748 native bee species sampled across multiple Atlantic Forest landscapes. It includes species-level data on abundance, geographic distribution, habitat specificity, and classification of rarity based on Rabinowitz’s framework, which integrates three dimensions: geographic range, habitat specificity, and local population size. Additionally, the dataset provides diversity metrics, including species richness, alpha diversity indices (Menhinick, Margalef, Shannon, and Pielou), and beta diversity components (total beta diversity, turnover, and nestedness). Environmental variables associated with each sampling site are also included, such as climatic predictors (e.g., temperature and precipitation metrics), altitude, and vegetation cover. Landscape-level data classify sampling sites according to vegetation cover gradients and spatial configuration (e.g., buffer-based classifications). This dataset enables the exploration of relationships between ecological rarity, environmental gradients, and biodiversity patterns, as well as comparisons between ecological rarity and formal conservation status (e.g., IUCN Red List categories). It is intended to support research on biodiversity conservation, community ecology, and the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on pollinator communities.
