The Illusion of Openness: Ideological Convergence and the Limits of Critique in the Social Sciences

The social sciences were often positioned as disciplines committed to openness, reflexivity, and critical inquiry. However, in many academic contexts, tension persisted between these claims and patterned ways of thinking. This study examined how ideological conformity emerged within social science discourse and shaped the practice of critique. Using qualitative interpretive analysis of theoretical literature, selected scholarly works, and institutional discourses, the study identified recurring commitments to power, inequality, and emancipation that had become routine disciplinary reflexes. While these frameworks had historically advanced critical scholarship, their institutionalization contributed to predictability and the narrowing of interpretive scope. Rather than viewing this as a disciplinary failure, the study interpreted ideological homogeneity as a product of historically situated academic practices and institutional norms. The paper advanced reflexive pluralism as a necessary condition for sustaining the vitality of social inquiry.
