When Perfect Grammar Becomes Kitsch: Language, Display, and the Fetish of Correctness

Perfect grammar has long been associated with education, refinement, and intellectual discipline. Yet in contemporary communication the meaning of linguistic perfection may be shifting. This essay examines the cultural role of grammatical correctness and argues that, when elevated into an object of admiration in itself, perfect grammar can function as a form of linguistic kitsch—a polished surface that signals refinement without necessarily conveying deeper substance. Drawing on insights from sociolinguistics and cultural theory, the paper distinguishes between grammar as a tool of clarity and grammar as a form of social signaling. The discussion then considers how recent developments in large language models (LLMs) and automated text generation are transforming this signal. When grammatically flawless sentences can be produced instantly by machines, linguistic perfection may no longer indicate cultivated authorship. Instead, it increasingly reflects the industrialization of polished language. The essay situates this shift within a broader anthropological observation: while societies often recognize the economic and institutional consequences of technological change, they pay less attention to its subtle effects on cultural signals—how authenticity, politeness, refinement, and intellectual authority are expressed and perceived. By examining grammar through the lenses of aesthetics, sociology, and technological change, the paper argues that the meaning of linguistic correctness is evolving in the age of automated language.
