The article examines the theoretical and methodological principles of the economic development of an enterprise in a dynamic external environment. Increasing instability of market conditions, intensification of competition, the spread of technological innovation and global economic transformations require reconsideration of approaches to enterprise development management. The study clarifies the content of the concept of economic development of an enterprise and distinguishes it from related economic categories such as economic growth and operational efficiency. It is shown that economic development reflects not only quantitative growth of performance indicators but primarily qualitative transformations in management systems, organizational structures, resource use and innovation processes. Modern scientific approaches to understanding enterprise development are analysed, and the main factors influencing the formation of a sustainable development model are identified. The results demonstrate that stable enterprise development depends on the flexibility of management systems, investment activity, digitalization of business processes and effective use of internal resource potential. The study substantiates the necessity of forming an adaptive management system for enterprise development based on improved strategic planning, systematic monitoring of the external environment and effective risk management mechanisms. The research proposes directions for stimulating enterprise development, including the introduction of innovative managerial approaches, intensification of investment activity, optimization of resource utilization and strengthening of the enterprise’s market orientation. The obtained results have practical significance for improving enterprise management systems across various industries in the context of increasing environmental dynamics and growing competitive pressure.
