Abstract Intonation is crucial in L2 learning because it affects intelligibility and conveys discourse‐level meanings. However, crosslinguistic differences in intonation inventories, phonetic realizations, and form‐meaning associations present significant challenges for L2 learners. This entry describes some history of L2 intonation learning, the impact of learners' first language(s), and intonation perception and production. Based on crosslinguistic research, this entry reviews how variations across languages influence L2 intonation learning and discusses pedagogical methods focusing on the description of intonation and form‐meaning association. Finally, this entry addresses the persistent gap between theoretical insights and practical application, highlighting advancements such as visualization tools and web‐based training platforms and emphasizing the need for a more accessible description of intonation and improvement in teacher education.
