Developing Novel Interactive Serious Games Using Non-Image-Based Brick Tangible User Interfaces

The system of non-image-based tangible user interfaces integrates physical bricks with interactive cognitive serious games. The system identifies the features and positions of bricks by reading the encoded data stored in chips embedded within bricks. Currently, the system offers the memory game. Fourteen elderly participants were recruited for the study and divided into two groups: five individuals with normal cognitive function and nine individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). All subjects underwent a two-week training program in memory games. The study revealed a significant difference in game performance data between the two groups before and after the training. This finding underscores the potential of the developed interactive games in improving the cognitive abilities of elderly individuals with MCI. The System Usability Scale (SUS) was used for assessment, with a total average SUS score of 84.28, indicating a positive user appraisal of the interactive games developed in this study.
