MEANINGS OF THE NON-ARAB NAMES OF THE PROPHETS THROUGH CONTEXTUAL INDICATION

This study explores the meanings of certain non-Arab (foreign) names of prophets mentioned in the Holy Qur’an by returning to the original meanings of these names in their respective languages, and by clarifying the role of Qur’anic contextual indication in weighing between these various meanings. The study also presents scholarly opinions on the occurrence of foreign names in the Qur’an. It highlights that when a foreign name undergoes Arabization, it must be adapted to the norms of the Arabic language, and thus cannot remain entirely in its original form. The study concludes that contextual indication plays the most influential role in preferring between the different interpretations of the non-Arab names of prophets. Sometimes the Qur’anic context confirms the original foreign meaning after Arabization, and at other times it negates it. The research employs inductive and analytical methodologies in examining Qur’anic verses as well as linguistic and exegetical sources to provide a comprehensive understanding that supports the study.
