Exploring Low‐Concentrating Photovoltaic Systems and Solar Cell Solutions for Nigeria's Renewable Energy Future

ABSTRACT Nigeria is experiencing a severe electricity shortfall, with more than 38% of the population having no reliable access to electricity. PV Installation still falls short of its potential due to high capital investment, poor infrastructure, and a lack of policies. This paper reviews low‐concentrating photovoltaic (LCPV) technologies like compound parabolic concentrators (CPC), dielectric crossed CPCs (dCCPCs), Fresnel lenses and quantum dot concentrators, and evaluates their suitability for Nigeria and other areas in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). The analysis combines technical aspects, including economics and materials, with local context such as regulatory impediments, grid limitations, or rural operational demands. Inorganic perovskite and crystalline silicon solar cells would be considered the most suitable for concentrator deployment under Nigeria′s hot and humid conditions. In comparative analysis, this paper finds that CPC‐based systems, integrated with locally manufacturable dielectric materials offer the most practical short‐term option and could reduce photovoltaic material and optical subsystem costs by up to 30% relative to conventional flat‐plate PV under favourable assumptions. The paper concludes by outlining priority technologies, enabling policies and pilot project strategies required for scalable deployment in Nigeria and similar SSA contexts.
