STATUS OF TRIBAL EDUCATION IN WEST BENGAL

Tribal communities constitute an important segment of the population of West Bengal, contributing significantly to the state’s cultural diversity. Despite various governmental initiatives and constitutional safeguards, the educational status of tribal communities remains relatively low compared to the general population. This paper examines the present status of tribal education in West Bengal with reference to literacy, enrollment, and challenges faced by tribal learners. The study highlights major issues such as poverty, language barriers, gender disparities, and inadequate infrastructure. It also analyses existing policies and programmes aimed at improving tribal education and proposes policy suggestions for strengthening inclusive and equitable educational opportunities for tribal populations.
