Representation of the image of the defender of the Fatherland in Russian superhero comics: political-intentional analysis

The article examines the representation of the “defender of the Fatherland” in contemporary Russian superhero comic culture using the method of intentional analysis. It explores the specific features of how this image functions within the visual and narrative structures of comics, based on the series “MIR”, “Major Grom”, “Nevsky”, and “Russians vs Lizards”. The aim of the study is to determine how the image of the defender of the Fatherland is constructed and transmitted in Russian superhero comics, as well as to identify the political-emotional meanings embedded by the authors in the corresponding narrative constructs. The research is based on the methodology of intentional analysis and a multimodal approach to visual texts, which includes interpreting authorial intent and the political emotives expressed through narrative and visual elements. The study reveals that in Russian superhero comics, the defender of the Fatherland is represented as a positive figure grounded in domestic historical, cultural, and ideological value concepts. The primary intentional emotives include pride, inspiration, and a sense of belonging. Comic authors employ metaphorical and provocative approaches to interpreting both historical and contemporary storylines, which contributes to the formation of an emotionally appealing and patriotically colored narrative. It is established that Russian superhero comic culture develops its own political-visual language, enabling a reinterpretation of the defender of the Fatherland in contemporary terms without losing traditional value content. The analysis results show that such works can function as instruments of cultural reflection and the strengthening of symbolic social unity.
