Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Heterocycles: Applications in Medicinal Chemistry

Microwave-assisted organic synthesis (MAOS), a potent and eco-friendly method for synthesizing a variety of bioactive heterocycles, greatly improves reaction efficiency, selectivity, and yield. This chapter focuses on the strategic use of microwave irradiation in the synthesis of nitrogen heterocyclic frameworks with five, six, and seven membered rings, which form essential scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. Microwave-assisted reactions provide a solvent-efficient way to create structurally complicated compounds. This method has demonstrated significant potential in the development of bioactive substances with strong anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, and antibacterial properties. The developments in microwave-assisted heterocycle synthesis and their significant uses in the search for and creation of medicinal drugs are compiled in this chapter.
