Biophysical Constraints on Spatiotemporal Symmetry Breaking: The Temporal and Energy Constraint Models (TCM/ECM) of Co-Regulation

Despite the proliferation of evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for families, a significant “efficacy gap” persists between structured clinical settings and naturalistic home environments. Highly trained caregivers frequently experience catastrophic regulatory failure. This theoretical review argues that mainstream clinical paradigms rely on a flawed Regulatory Availability Assumption (RAA), which presumes that the prefrontal metabolic capacity and temporal windows required for high-cognitive interventions are consistently accessible during acute crises. To bridge this gap, we introduce a computational psychopathology framework, conceptualizing the family as a coupled dynamical system governed by strict biophysical constraints. We argue that systemic collapse is not a compliance failure or moral deficit, but a predictable non-linear phase transition—a form of spatiotemporal symmetry breaking in the family’s regulatory network. Introducing the Temporal Constraint Model (TCM) and the Energy Constraint Model (ECM), we formally model how the symmetrical, reciprocal dynamics of parent-child co-regulation rupture along temporal (refractory periods) and spatial (topological energy distribution) boundaries.
