Eyelid agenesis in two domestic rabbits from the same litter

Abstract Two juvenile mini lop rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) from the same litter presented with bilateral congenital upper eyelid agenesis, characterised by the absence of the central upper eyelids and convex curvature of the residual nasal and temporal segments. The more severely affected rabbit developed secondary corneal ulceration and underwent bilateral wedge resections with eyelid margin apposition. Postoperatively, ocular comfort, discharge and corneal ulceration improved, although mild eyelid margin irregularity and slight corneal exposure during blinking persisted. Long‐term management consisted of ocular lubrication and monitoring. The less severely affected rabbit showed no corneal ulceration and was managed conservatively with lubrication alone. At 9‐month follow‐up, no progression of ocular surface disease or discomfort was observed. This is the first reported case of congenital upper eyelid agenesis in rabbits and describes the clinical management and outcomes, with reference to the existing literature on eyelid agenesis.
