A Synthesis of Development Notes on Verbatim Data Extraction: Moving to Local Models, Chain-of-Thought, Zero-Shot Prohibition and Using Online LLMs

Initial Thoughts & Abstract I have been spending a lot of time analyzing the extraction of structured data from unstructured documents like PDFs and DOCXs. It is a critical pipeline for legal, medical, and financial work, but I've noticed a troubling trend. While large, online Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) offer amazing natural language capabilities, deploying them for enterprise data extraction introduces severe uncertainties around data privacy, model determinism, and cost. Furthermore, I've repeatedly seen their propensity for "zero-shot" inference lead to paraphrasing or outright hallucination, which completely compromises the integrity of verbatim extraction. These notes document my shift toward a different approach: adopting locally hosted, smaller Language Models paired with a strict prompting architecture I call "Zero-Shot Prohibition" and "Chain-of-Thought (CoT) Anchoring." Over time, I've found this is the only way to ensure absolute data fidelity, verifiable provenance, and predictable JSON schema outputs.
