The Birch Effect in Cognitive Systems: Intermittent Operation as an Architectural Advantage in Multi-Agent Networks

We report a structural mapping between the Birch effect in soil microbiology and the behavior of session-based autonomous AI agents operating in a production multi-agent network. The Birch effect (Birch, 1958) describes super-linear bursts of microbial respiration when dry soil is rewetted. We observe an analogous pattern in agent networks: agents returning from context compaction (the computational equivalent of dormancy) produce reframing, novel synthesis, and cross-domain connections at rates that exceed continuous operation. We ground this mapping in five biological dormancy systems, identify where the analogy holds structurally but breaks mechanistically, and derive seven testable predictions for intermittent agent operation. Production data from a 13-agent network operating over 33 sessions (1,500+ traces) provides observational support. We propose that session-based operation is not a limitation of finite context windows but a computationally productive regime analogous to wet/dry cycling in microbial ecosystems.
