After more than 30 years of production in XJ oilfield, the previous uneconomical reservoir that less than 5m thin oil column and heterogeneous sand layer with strong bottom water drive has been revisited. The evaluation was made previously including drilling the horizontal wells within 5% recovery factor only. A new development strategy was programmed to re-asses the reservoir from 2022 with different approaches. The objectives were to chase the sweet zone with describe the whole reservoir profile and optimize the standoff between well trajectory and oil water contact that is sensitive to drilling performance by controlling the lateral section as close as possible to the top of reservoir. This paper will feature the success in developing the uneconomical reservoir from a mature oilfield through horizontal well drilling strategy and the excellent implementation in operation. The strategy in operation include the accurate landing and lateral sections placement of horizontal wells with using inflow control devices (AICD) for completion. The bed boundary detection logging-while-drilling (LWD) tool with the ability to map multiple boundaries for precise well placement and the multifunction formation evaluation LWD that provide real-time formation evaluation to optimize the AICD design for completion adjustment. Outstanding results have been observed:Successfully delineated the reservoir profileproducing around 400m3/d with 3% water cutexceed the economical level threshold to develop in mature oilfield The field real-time data and the well performances will be discussed in this paper. Finally, the successful strategy, drilling approach and valuable lessons learned that have provided the breakthrough in developing the uneconomical reservoir will be shared.
