Common wild edible roots, rhizomes and tubers of Manipur

Indigenous wild foods such as roots, rhizomes and tubers are important sources of energy, essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals for people living in the hills and valleys of Manipur. The local people are habituated to the native food plants, many of which are extracted from the wild. Beyond its dietary value, these food plants are deeply embedded in their culture, rituals, tradition, traditional knowledge systems and livelihood means. The survey was conducted for wild edible roots, rhizomes and tubers at the valley markets of Manipur and documented 20 plant species from the study area. The integration of indigenous knowledge with contemporary conservation strategies can ensure sustainable harvesting and long-term availability of these resources. Scientific research and documentation could help validate the nutritional and medicinal properties, providing for their inclusion in modern food systems.
