Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): Design and Installation Challenges for Floating Production Unit (FPU)

Summary Main source of electrical power is very critical in offshore oil and gas facilities to maintain all services necessary for keeping the facilities in normal operation. The electrical system availability and reliability must not adversely impact the facility availability. Power availability must not be compromised by planned or unplanned shutdown of a single main power generator. While there are conventional solutions to address the availability issue such as N+1 main generator configuration concept, with emergency power generation system, these solutions will not resolve the unplanned main generator trips hence it will still affect plant production and power supply will be interrupted. This paper presents Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation for Floating Production Unit (FPU) offshore oil and gas facilities and address installation challenges including power system design. BESS is a Battery Energy Storage System which functions to store electricity for a certain period and will be able to deliver the electricity instantly when required to maintain smooth power supply for plant operation even during one of main power generation failure. In the event of 1 of running Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) trips, remaining GTG and BESS will have sufficient combined spinning reserve to power the FPU loads until the plant operator starting the cold standby GTG.
