Abstract Oil production in the Offshore Southeast Sumatra field is challenged by limited power availability, restricting simultaneous operation of over 90 wells equipped with ESP. To overcome this constraint, Permanent Magnet Motors (PMMs) are deployed in combination with smart-edge real-time monitoring. This integration significantly enhances energy efficiency, reduces power consumption, improves ESP performance, and lowers operational costs. In such a power-constrained environment, energy optimization is essential for sustaining production and ensuring long-term field viability. This study assesses the effectiveness of Permanent Magnet Motor (PMM) technology in reducing power consumption and operational costs. Unlike Induction Motor (IM)-driven ESPs, which consume additional energy to generate a magnetic field, PMMs utilize built-in permanent magnets, eliminating this energy loss and significantly lowering electricity usage—resulting in notable cost savings. The integration of smart-edge real-time monitoring further enhances system performance through continuous tracking, remote optimization, and faster response to changing well conditions. Based on a comprehensive evaluation, four high-potential wells were selected for PMM deployment, prioritized by their barrel-of-oil-per-kilowatt performance. The findings prove that PMM systems significantly outperform IM-driven ESPs, achieving higher efficiency and delivering power savings of up to 20%. This improvement translates to a reduction in power consumption from 1,396 kW to 1,185 kW—a saving of 211 kW—resulting approximately $200K in potential annual power cost reductions. The enhanced efficiency of PMM technology reduces power required to lift each barrel of fluid from 0.0303 kW/BFPD to 0.0256 kW/BFPD, highlighting its superior performance and energy efficiency. In addition, the deployment of 24/7 proactive real-time monitoring eliminates the need for periodic site visits previously required for sensor data retrieval, significantly reducing fuel boat costs. Seamless web-based data access and remote-control capabilities not only enhance operational efficiency but also extend ESP run life, minimize unplanned downtime, and improve production reliability—resulting in further monthly operational cost savings. Following the successful deployment of four PMM-driven ESPs, more installations are planned this year. As adoption progresses, the integration of PMM technology with real-time monitoring is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing offshore oil production—driving greater energy efficiency and lowering operational expenditures. In an environment where every barrel matters, embracing such innovations reflects a strategic shift toward more sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective offshore operations.
