Hsse and Cost Improvements Through the Deployment of Robotic Technology for Deepwater Underwater Inspection In-Lieu of Diving

Abstract Deployment of technology and digital solutions for the inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) of deepwater offshore facilities can enable safer, cheaper and more efficient execution. To be fit-for-purpose, these technologies need to constantly evolve to cater for the increasing complexities in offshore operations as field developments extend into deeper waters. Minimizing human exposure to safety hazards and executing work at high efficiency and low costs are constant challenges especially for deepwater underwater IMR activities. The use of robotics can deliver these objectives, and this has been proven for one of operated deepwater facilities in Malaysia where a purpose-built robot has been successfully used to execute the underwater inspection of mooring chains in underwater confined space i.e. fairlead. The team identified, developed and deployed a robotic crawler that could maneuver, clean, inspect and gauge the mooring chains within the tight confines of the fairleads without pulling up the chains or use of divers. This Robotic Crawler was successfully deployed on the GK semi-FPS in 2023-2025. This enabled the team to maintain safe operations of the facility and demonstrate compliance with the regulatory standards for deepwater floating production systems. Other key outcomes include elimination of diver's line of fire hazard, improved data quality via photogrammetry, reduction of maintenance cost and measurable reduction in carbon footprint.
