Nanomaterials: A Technical Journey to Meet Depleted Field Cementing Challenges

Abstract In the offshore oilfields of BSP, prolonged exploitation has led to significant reservoir pressure depletion and reduced formation strength, making drilling losses and cement losses persistent challenges. As drilling demands shift towards deeper wells and extended-reach horizontal wells, drilling operations face high differential pressures reaching 2500 psi or higher. A well-strengthened wellbore that can undertake such high differential pressure is a core for prevention of both the drilling and cementing losses. After years of testing various wellbore strengthening chemicals, BSP defined five key criteria for a comprehensive solution. However, most existing plugging materials on the market can only meet some of these criteria, failing to provide a complete solution. This abstract will explain the journey BSP went through to solve this type of issue.
