Exploring the Nexus Between the "Yahoo Yahoo" Phenomenon Among Youths and The Culture of Ritual Killings for Wealth Among the Yoruba People of Southwestern Nigeria

This paper provides a critical investigation into the nexus between two seemingly distinct but fundamentally interconnected criminal phenomena prevalent in Southwestern Nigeria: the pervasive "Yahoo Yahoo" internet fraud scheme and the persisting culture of ritual killings for wealth acquisition. It posits that these are not isolated social pathologies but deeply intertwined manifestations of a singular socio-spiritual and economic crisis: the emergence of what this study terms a necro-economy - an economic subsystem where individual success and social mobility are pursued through the symbolic or literal sacrifice, commodification, and destruction of human life and dignity. Employing a multidisciplinary framework that synthesizes cultural criminology, sociology of religion, and postcolonial political economy, this research analyses the shared structural drivers, symbiotic operational logics, and convergent cultural narratives linking globalized digital fraud with localized ritual murder. The study argues that both criminal practices emanate from profound youth disillusionment, a crisis of legitimate opportunity, and a corrupted interpretation of traditional Yoruba cosmological concepts, particularly àṣẹ (inherent spiritual authority) and orò (wealth). The investigation finds compelling evidence that the "Yahoo Yahoo" ecosystem frequently incorporates explicit ritualistic elements, colloquially known as "Yahoo Plus," wherein practitioners seek spiritual fortification from traditional priests or Islamic clerics to guarantee fraudulent success. This practice blurs the ontological line between cyber-fraud and spiritual crime. Concurrently, ritual killings for wealth represent a more visceral enactment of the same underlying logic of desperate accumulation, where the human body is physically dismembered as transactional offering. The paper concludes that this disturbing nexus reveals a moral and existential vacuum within contemporary Nigerian society, wherein the human person is radically commodified—either as a disembodied digital data-point to be exploited online, or as a physical body whose parts are rendered as magical commodities. The study offers holistic policy and cultural recommendations addressing not merely criminal symptoms but the foundational crises of value, hope, and ethical imagination plaguing a generation of Nigerian youth.
