Abstract This paper presents the development, qualification, and performance assessment of VM 110 MS, a 110-ksi carbon steel grade engineered for mild sour service in accordance with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156. The study addresses the gap between conventional Region 2 material requirements and the frequent use of Region 3 grades, which can introduce unnecessary metallurgical and operational constraints. The grade was evaluated through a structured sour service qualification program covering: 1) The primary Region 2 severity envelope (ppH2S: 0.01 to 1 bar; pH: 3.5 to 5.5); 2) an additional critical point located near the lower boundary of Region 3 (0.03 bar / pH 3.3); 3) a Quality Control condition slightly above the Region 2 diagonal (0.07 bar H2S/pH 4.0). Mechanical properties, SSC resistance, and chemical composition were verified through tensile testing, impact testing, hardness control, and TM0177 Method A sulfide stress cracking evaluation for corrosion tests. Results demonstrate stable SSC performance across all test points, consistent with the intended Region 2 application envelope. Mechanical properties meet the 110ksi requirement with adequate ductility, controlled hardness, and compliance with API 5CT and API 6A metallurgical limits. The study also examines manufacturing routes for thick wall and shaped tubes and their implications for metallurgical homogeneity and accessory integration. Overall, the paper establishes the technical basis for deploying VM 110 MS as a fit for purpose grade for mild sour environments where Region 3 materials are not required requirement with adequate ductility, controlled hardness, and compliance with API 5CT and API 6A metallurgical limits. The study also examines manufacturing routes for thick wall and shaped tubes and their implications for metallurgical homogeneity and accessory integration. Overall, the paper establishes the technical basis for deploying VM 110 MS as a fit for purpose grade for mild sour environments where Region 3 materials are not required. In summary, the key advantage of this grade is to provide the industry with a superior alternative that not only meets technical requirements but also delivers significant financial benefits. The availability of this proprietary 110ksi mild sour grade for both OCTG products and accessories ensures full compatibility and supports the consistent performance required throughout the entire string.
