The Relationship between the Oral Care Practices and Interest Levels of Mothers of School-Age Children and Their Children’s Oral Care Behavior and the Number of Teeth with Caries Experience

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between the level of oral care practice and interest of mothers of school-age children and their children's oral care behavior. Methods: Data were collected from 198 mothers of school-age children living in Namyangju City. The data were analyzed using cross-tabulation and multiple regression analysis. Results: Children of mothers with only one child brushed their teeth more frequently per day. Children whose mothers demonstrated conscientious oral hygiene practices also brushed their teeth more frequently and were more likely to receive regular dental checkups. The number of teeth with caries was significantly associated with mothers’ oral care practices, number of children, mothers’ interest in oral care, and children’s regular dental checkups. These variables explained 49.3% of the number of teeth with caries experience. Conclusions: A active maternal practices and interest in oral care are essential for preventing dental caries and reducing the number of affected teeth in school-age children. Oral health support programs targeting mothers with multiple children are urgently needed.
