Mathematical modelling for Performance Evaluation of Wind Turbine-Powered Battery Management Systems for Electric Vehicles

Abstract This paper examines the viability and efficiency of a wind-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station in realistic settings of the environmental conditions of the Pune region, Maharashtra, India. The proposed model entails wind turbines, AC-DC converters, battery storage, and EV charging interface that will be managed by a centralized management unit. In order to examine the behaviour of the system given different wind profiles, which include low (average speed of approximately 2.3 m/s), moderate (approximately 4.1 m/s) and high wind (approximately 6.6 m/s) speeds, a MATLAB simulation was created to process the system with synthetic data created with 5 minute periods and a 24 hours cycle. Profiles of the wind velocity were converted to the respective power output which ranged at an average of about 0.18 kW, 0.45 kW, and 1.3 kW in low, moderate and high wind conditions respectively. The State of Charge (SOC) analysis of the batteries showed that low wind speeds were not enough to charge the EVs sustainably (SOC =31%), whereas moderate wind speeds could be used to charge the vehicles gradually (SOC =72.5%). The fast speed of wind contributed to the quick saturation of batteries, which facilitated constant and stable charging of EVs all day long (SOC ~97.4%). This paper has shown that given the proper design and control measures, wind energy systems can contribute significantly to off-grid power to charge EV infrastructure, especially in areas that have good wind access. Other renewable hybrid systems also have scalability through the simulation framework.
