Metacognitive Approaches to Technology Addiction: The Overlooked Role of Metacognitive Therapy

Technology addiction, marked by the excessive and uncontrolled use of digital devices, is increasingly recognized as a behavioral disorder influenced by underlying cognitive mechanisms. Among these, metacognition—the system responsible for monitoring and regulating cognitive processes—emerges as a critical factor. Empirical findings highlight the role of maladaptive metacognitive beliefs, particularly regarding uncontrollability, danger, and the need for thought control, in sustaining technology-related addictive behaviors. Despite the theoretical alignment between these findings and the principles of Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), clinical applications of MCT in technology addiction remain limited. This letter underscores the potential of MCT as a structured, evidence-based intervention targeting dysfunctional metacognitive patterns in technology use. Given the expanding digital landscape, incorporating metacognitive frameworks into prevention and treatment strategies is imperative. The underutilization of MCT in this domain represents both a clinical gap and a research opportunity that warrants immediate attention.
