Design and simulation of high-speed photonic crystal permutation switch for optical computing

Recent days, two-dimensional novel photonic crystal optical switch with high-speed has been employed in optical network applications. A ring resonant cavity is linked to both input and output waveguides. In this work a novel resonator in octagon shape is designed to couple the light waves. This design is formed on a square shaped lattice, Indium Phosphide rods set against an air background. The interaction of light waves with various wavelengths are simulated in this innovative method using different logic states such as [1 0], [0 1] states of 2 x 2 and [1 0 0], [0 1 0], [0 0 1] states of 3 x 3 optical switch. This optical switch directs the light rays along the specified path by utilizing the effect of interference. Simulations of light behavior are conducted for 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 optical switches. The method of Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) is employed to obtain the bandgap structure, while the parameters as data rate, time of response and cross talk, evaluated using the method Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD). Simulation indicate that the switch has fast response time of 0.47 ps, data rate of 2.13 Tbps, and less crosstalk of -17.62 dB, attributed to its compact size of 376.93 µm2. Consequently, this method compromise for constructing wider bandwidth for communication networks.
