Design and numerical analysis of a hybrid microstructured optical fiber with concentric rings and chiral arms

In this work, we detail the design and simulation of a new silica-based microstructured optical fiber (MOF). The fiber’s core is doped with GeO₂ and is surrounded by a unique cladding made of three concentric airhole rings and six outer chiral arms. We built this hybrid design to work within the telecom bands and used COMSOL Multiphysics with the finite element method (FEM) to explore its guiding properties. We investigated guiding characteristics like the effective refractive index, mode area, and nonlinear coefficient across a range of wavelengths. In reality, we calculated the doped core’s material properties with the mixed Sellmeier model. Findings suggest that the hybrid structure can be considered as promising candidate for applications where engineered nonlinear effects are essential.
