Design of a miniaturized dual-band, dual-polarized microstrip antenna featuring a partial ground plane

In this study we propose a miniaturized dual-band radiating configuration offering two polarization states (horizontal and vertical) across two operating bands configured along a partial ground plane deign is illustrated. The presented radiating element exhibits electrical dimensions of 0.335λ × 0.335λ × 0.02λ, where λ denotes the wavelength corresponding to the lower resonance frequency of 3.875 GHz. The radiating element is simulated on a cost-effective FR-4 epoxy dielectric material. On the top surface, a symmetric multi-step microstrip radiator with a centrally located open-ended T-shaped slot is implemented, while the bottom surface consists of a partial ground plane with two corner slits at the top edges and an additional central slit to enhance impedance bandwidth (IBW). The proposed design achieves two impedance bands, 3.87– 7.82 GHz and 10.87–14.35 GHz, corresponding to fractional bandwidths of 67.48% and 27.59% corresponding to resonant frequencies of 5.85 GHz and 12.61 GHz, respectively. The radiating structure attains a peak gain of 7.36 dBi at 13.7 GHz, with radiation efficiency ranging from 85% to 97% across both bands. The lower frequency band covers applications such as satellite communications (C-band), radar, Wi-Fi (5 GHz), and fixed wireless links, while the higher frequency band supports satellite communications (Ku-band), radar (X-band), fixed wireless, and broadcast services.
