From Heartburn to Healing: Understanding Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Have you ever heard someone mention having a burning feeling in their chest after eating a large spicy meal, and wondered what it was? That uncomfortable feeling is often a symptom of a condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when the “door” between the food pipe (esophagus) and the stomach does not close properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back upward. This backflow causes the painful burning feeling known as heartburn. Certain things, like large or fatty meals, lying down too soon after eating, pregnancy, obesity, or some medicines, can make this backflow more likely. Over time, repeated acid splash attacks can injure the food pipe and lead to serious problems.
