Reading Memory and Transformative Space in Jakarta’s National and West Irian Liberation Monuments

This study explores the ideological meanings embedded in Jakarta’s National Monument and the West Irian Liberation Monument within the context of Indonesia’s post-independence urban formation. Rather than approaching these monuments merely as symbolic representations or political spectacles, this research conceptualizes them as active socio-spatial agents that shape collective memory, civic consciousness, and national identity. A qualitative interpretative approach was adopted, combining field observation and literature review to generate empirical and contextual data. The analysis integrates Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework and Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space to examine architectural form, spatial placement, and everyday urban practices associated with the monuments. The findings indicate that, at the denotative level, both monuments function as landmarks, nodes, and public spaces that organize spatial orientation and enhance urban imageability in Jakarta. At the connotative level, their architectural forms convey ideological meanings related to unity, independence, and sovereignty, reflecting independence as a continuous process of mental and cultural transformation. At the mythic level, dominant narratives that frame Jakarta as a “city as stage” and monuments as beacon projects are shown to obscure their pedagogical, integrative, and socio-spatial roles. The novelty of this study lies in repositioning the monument as manifestations of genius loci spaces of memory and transformation where cultural values, historical narratives, and lived spatial practices converge.
