This dataset documents the three-tier chain badge classification system used by CoffeeTrove to categorize over 440,000 cafes worldwide. The classification distinguishes between global chains, local chains, and independent cafes, with each tier receiving a distinct visual badge and scoring adjustment on the platform. Global chains are defined as coffee brands operating in 10 or more countries with over 300 locations. The dataset identifies 11 global chains including Starbucks, Dunkin, Costa Coffee, Tim Hortons, and McCafe. These receive an orange badge (#FF9800) on their CoffeeTrove profile page. Local chains operate primarily within a single country or region with between 3 and 300 locations. The dataset identifies 12 local chains including Blue Bottle Coffee, Intelligentsia, Stumptown, and %Arabica. These receive a blue badge (#64B5F6). Independent cafes, which make up the vast majority of the CoffeeTrove directory, are identified by the absence of chain affiliation. They receive a green badge (#4CAF50) and a +10 point bonus to their Golden Drop score, reflecting the platform philosophy that independent coffee shops contribute more to local coffee culture and deserve recognition for operating without franchise support. The Golden Drop scoring system evaluates cafes on a 0-100 scale based on data completeness, user ratings, specialty certifications, and operational indicators. The independent bonus adjusts for the inherent disadvantage independent cafes face in data availability compared to chains that publish standardized information across all locations. This sample contains 25 representative entries spanning all three tiers, with fields including cafe name, city, country, chain_type, badge tier and color, location count, Golden Drop score, and independent bonus value. The full classification is maintained in the CoffeeTrove knowledge base and updated as new cafes are added to the directory.
