In a nutshell This repository provides climate visualization plots for HISTALP (Historical Instrumental Climatological Surface Time Series of the Greater Alpine Region; see Auer et al., 2007) stations. The plots depict long-term temperature change at the station level using annual anomalies relative to the 1961–1990 reference period. Inspiration and methods The visual design is heavily inspired by the “Warming Stripes” concept by Ed Hawkins: https://ed-hawkins.github.io/climate-visuals/stripes.html https://showyourstripes.info Plots are generated in R with ggplot2 Source code and workflow: https://gitlab.com/Rexthor/climatestriper Visualization types Warming stripes: minimalist tiled plots showing annual temperature anomalies by station. Warming bars: column (bar) plots with labels, provided in both English and German variants. Contents bars_de.zip » Climate bars with German labels bars_en.zip »Climate bars with English labels stripes.zip » Language-agnostic climate stripes histalp_station-map.png » Map of Austrian HISTALP stations with abbreviations histalp_temporal-coverage.png » Temporal coverage overview of all stations preview_vie.png » Climate bars of Vienna (1775–2025), without any labels. Used as main element in the hexsticker of the repo. data.zip » tidy version of HISTALP station data (annual averages, monthly averages, station metadata) Data The data.zip archive contains three csv files: data.zip├── histalp_annual.csv├── histalp_monthly.csv└── histalp_station_metadata.csv histalp_annual.csv » annual average temperature observations with column names abbrev (station abbreviation) year temperature (in ° C) cn_6190 (average of the climatological normal 1961–1990) anomaly (relative to the climatological normal 1961–1990) histalp_monthly.csv » monthly average temperature observations with column names abbrev date temperature histalp_station_metadata.csv » station metadata with column names name abbrev lon lat elevation start (first year on record) end (last year on record) length (length of the time series in years) Note: lon/lat are provided in WGS84 (EPSG:4326) Licensing HISTALP is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY‑NC 4.0) as documented in https://data.hub.geosphere.at/dataset/histalp-v1-1y.
