Synergistic Effect of <scp>SEBS</scp> and Oil Small Molecule Additions for Toughening <scp>PP</scp>

ABSTRACT To improve the poor impact strength of polypropylene, SEBS and paraffin oil 32# were used to enhance its toughness. The toughening effects of different contents of SEBS and paraffin oil were systematically studied. The results showed that the addition of paraffin oil reduces the decomposition temperature of the PP/SEBS composite. Additionally, SEBS and paraffin oil 32# both decreased the crystallization temperature of PP and hindered its crystallization. When the SEBS content increased from 0% to 30%, the impact strength of the PP/SEBS blends at room temperature and −30°C increased by 1317% and 1709%, respectively, compared to pure PP. When the SEBS content reached 20%, the blend system transitioned from brittle fracture to ductile fracture, and the UV aging resistance also significantly improved. The addition of small molecule oils also significantly enhanced the impact strength of PP/SEBS; when the paraffin oil 32# content was 20%, the impact strength at room temperature and −30°C increased by 90% and 176%, respectively, compared to the samples without paraffin oil. The paraffin oil worked synergistically with SEBS to toughen the PP.
