Study of the composition of wood combustion products at various stages of an internal fire using the AGM-510 gas analyser

An experiment was conducted to study changes in the composition of wood combustion products under conditions similar to those of an interior fire using an AGM-510 gas analyzer. During the experiment, the concentrations of carbon monoxide (II), carbon oxide (IV), and oxygen were determined at the sampling point, as well as the temperature during free and restricted gas exchange. Pine blocks were used as the combustible load. With free air flowing into the combustion chamber, an inverse relationship was found between fire temperature and carbon monoxide concentration, as well as between the oxygen and carbon dioxide contents. The experiment revealed that the most toxic environment forms at temperatures around 150°C, not only at the onset of wood combustion but also during the afterburning of its carbon residues. During a study of the composition of wood combustion products under limited gas exchange, three peaks in carbon monoxide concentration were recorded: at low temperatures at the beginning and during combustion, and when the highest combustion temperature was reached. Presumably, the high carbon monoxide concentration is due to the low temperature of the gas environment inside the combustion chamber (approximately 150°C), at which its complete oxidation to carbon oxide (IV) does not occur, even with a relatively high oxygen concentration. The increase in carbon monoxide concentration at the maximum temperature is due to a lack of oxygen due to a limited air supply.
