A Systematic Review of Mathematical Interpretations of the Weton Marriage Tradition within Islamic Cultural Contexts

This study is grounded in the limited integration of mathematics, culture, and religion within academic discussions of local traditions, particularly the weton marriage calculation practice. It aims to explore the mathematical concepts embedded in weton calculations and to analyse these practices from an Islamic law perspective within an interdisciplinary framework. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following the six-stage PRISMA 2020 protocol, including the formulation of research questions, development of a search strategy, application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, study selection, quality assessment, and thematic synthesis. Data were collected from Google Scholar and Garuda using the keywords “weton nikah,” “cultural mathematics,” “ethnomathematics,” and “Islamic legal perspective,” with publications limited to the 2021–2025 period. From an initial 542 articles, 81 passed the title and abstract screening, 22 met the quality criteria, and 10 studies were selected for in-depth analysis. The results indicate that weton calculations incorporate fundamental mathematical concepts such as basic arithmetic operations, modular arithmetic, and symbolic numeration systems. From the perspective of Islamic law, the practice is categorized as cultural tradition (‘urf) and is considered permissible provided it is not associated with determinism or beliefs that contradict the principle of monotheism. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that integrating mathematical analysis with cultural and religious perspectives can enhance the relevance of ethnomathematics, support contextual learning, and strengthen the connection between mathematical understanding, cultural identity, and ethical values.
