Framework for the Inclusion of Virtual Reality in Building Information Modeling (BIM) Courses

This paper outlines a comprehensive framework for integrating augmented reality (AR) into Building Information Modeling (BIM) curricula.As the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry increasingly adopts immersive technologies, it is essential for engineering education to follow suit.This research provides a practical, step-by-step guide for academic programs that want to use VR headsets to enhance their BIM courses.The framework documents the procedures, identifies the necessary equipment, and offers solutions to common technical challenges when converting BIM models into interactive AR experiences.The core of this project involves using VR headsets to link digital models with the physical world.The process begins with creating detailed BIM models using industry-standard modeling software.These models are then prepared for the immersive environment using real-time visualization software, allowing their transfer to the VR headsets.This approach lets students place a virtual representation of a structure on a real-world site.This provides a level of spatial understanding and design comprehension that traditional 2D plans cannot match.A key objective of this research is to document the entire process meticulously.The technical specifications of the hardware, the software settings, and the specific procedures followed will be reported.Most importantly, the various problems and errors encountered during testing, from model optimization issues to hardware calibration challenges, will be highlighted.The resulting guidelines will serve as a troubleshooting manual for other programs seeking to implement a similar setup, saving them valuable time and resources.This project not only teaches students how to use the technology but also demonstrates its practical value in enhancing project communication and quality control.
