ADIPOSITY AND THYROID AXIS DYSFUNCTION IN ADOLESCENTS: PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATION

The growing incidence of obesity and thyroid disorders among teenagers is a major public health problem, as obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥30) occurs in around 1 in 5 adolescents and may lead to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. At the same time, thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are increasingly being diagnosed in adolescent females and likely contribute to obesity and metabolic diseases. This complex interaction has significant implications for growth, development, and long-term health outcomes in this susceptible group. Obesity affects approximately 1 in 5 teenagers, with an increased risk of developing insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Thyroid ailments, most often hypothyroidism, are being increasingly diagnosed in teenagers with possible complications of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The interaction between obesity and thyroid dysfunction can have detrimental effects on growth, development, and longer-term health outcomes. We need holistic interventions that promote healthy practices and self-acceptance while modifying the psychological and social determinants of eating behaviour.
