Redefining the Oral Health Needs of Special Health Care Children: Strengthening Preventive Screening and Community-Based Dental Care

Background: Oral health is essential for overall health and social well-being, but there are still significant gaps in access and outcomes for medically and developmentally vulnerable children. Individuals with special health care needs often show a higher prevalence of dental caries, periodontal diseases, and untreated oral conditions relative to their peers. These problems are made worse by the fact that health systems are intricate and caregivers have to deal with behavioral issues. Conventional dental care, primarily focused on curative treatment, may inadequately address these interrelated determinants. Objective: The Current review analyses the oral health requirements of children with special healthcare needs within a public health context, emphasizing the importance of systematic screening, early risk detection, and preventive-focused care pathways. Discussion: The focus is on scalable preventive measures, such as fluoride-based treatments, sealants, caregiver-supported oral hygiene practices, reducing dietary risks, and non-invasive techniques. The discussion also includes how community-based service models and integration with primary health systems can make care easier to access. Conclusion: To close the gaps and improve long-term oral health we need to move toward more structured, prevention-focused dental systems. Strengthening policy support, professional training, and coordinated care approaches can help make oral health services more equitable and accessible for this group of people who are at risk.
