Advances and Perspectives in Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells: A Data‐Driven Scientific Review

In this review, we offer a comprehensive, data‐driven analysis of the intellectual trajectory of organic solar cell (OSC) research using main path analysis, a bibliometric approach. This method traces key developments in OSCs from 2015 to 2025, with particular emphasis on the transformative rise of nonfullerene organic solar cells, which now dominate the efficiency frontier. Employing citation network analysis, we identify dominant scientific trajectories responsible for the rise in power conversion efficiencies beyond 19%. The study reveals thematic advancements spanning molecular design, donor–acceptor miscibility, multicomponent architectures, and scalable fabrication techniques. Two primary research streams emerge: one driven by molecular tailoring and ternary blend engineering, and another by photophysical optimization and morphological control. The integration of these approaches has produced notable improvements in performance, stability, and manufacturability. We also highlight emerging trends, including single‐component devices, eco‐friendly processing, and thick‐film solar cells with roll‐to‐roll potential. This review captures the historical and scientific depth of the field while identifying emerging directions and unresolved challenges, offering strategic insights for future research in organic photovoltaics. By contextualizing recent breakthroughs within a historical framework, it aims to accelerate the development and industrial translation of next‐generation OSCs.
