Myth and Modern Consciousness: Intertextual Revisions in Louise Glucks Poetry

This paper explore how Louise Gluck reinterprets classical myths as a dynamic literary strategy to express contemporary psychological and existential concerns. Drawing on theories of myth and intertextuality proposed by Carl Jung Northrop Frye and Julia Cristeva, the study views myth as an evolving structure rather than a fixed narrative. It analyses major collections such as Averno, Meadowlands, The Wild Iris, Ararat, and The Triumph of Achilles, highlighting Gluck’s use of figures like Persephone, Demeter and Odysseus in modern emotional context. Through these reinterpretations Gluck shifts myth from epic grandeur to psychological realism focusing on themes such as identity, love, family conflict, and memory.
