From Risk to Action: Predictive Profiling and Contemporary Treatment Context in Rheumatoid Arthritis Mortality

We were intrigued by the recent article by Joerns et al¹ that drew 4 decades of data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) to demonstrate a more than 2-fold increase in respiratory-related mortality among seropositive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with non-RA controls—a risk not observed in seronegative RA. This finding solidifies serostatus as a critical prognostic marker. To help translate this epidemiological insight into clinical practice, we wish to propose 3 methodological and interpretive refinements.
