(BaSr) ₂ SiO ₄ as an Efficient and Green Activator of Hydrogen Peroxide for Degradation of Rhodamine B

ABSTRACT The development of efficient and green activators for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is crucial for advanced oxidation processes. This study presents a novel double alkaline earth metal silicate, (BaSr) 2 SiO 4 (BSSO), as a highly effective and environmentally friendly activator for degrading Rhodamine B (RhB). The optimal BSSO material, synthesized with a Ba/Sr molar ratio of 1:2 and calcined at 900°C, achieved a remarkable 88% degradation efficiency of RhB within 120 min. A significant advantage of the BSSO/H 2 O 2 system is its inherent strong alkalinity, which is ideally suited for treating alkaline wastewater without requiring external pH adjustment. More importantly, BSSO functioned as an activator, enhancing the degradation rate by 4.7 times compared to a system with NaOH‐adjusted pH alone. Mechanistic investigations confirmed that the degradation proceeds primarily through radical pathways, with •O 2 − , HO•, and HO 2 • identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species, and the ecotoxicity was evaluated through Ecological Structure Activity Relationships (ECOSAR) program. Furthermore, BSSO demonstrated good stability, maintaining over 70% degradation efficiency after four consecutive cycles and outperforming other silicate‐based activators. Given its high efficiency, self‐regulating alkalinity, and absence of toxic ions, BSSO represents a promising and sustainable activator for practical organic wastewater treatment.
