Challenges in Designing Music Recommendation Systems

High-quality music recommendations play a crucial role in user retention and the monetization of streaming services. This paper examines the typical challenges in designing recommendation systems and the approaches to address them. It identifies the key tasks that arise at launch, including choosing an initial architecture, collecting data, and handling cold start and data sparsity, and during ongoing operation, including storing large volumes of data, shifts in user preferences, and long-term behavior. Industry-used solutions were analyzed regarding implementation complexity, adaptability to user context, and the quality of the recommendations. The study highlights solutions that offer the best overall balance, delivering high recommendation quality with moderate resource costs. Finally, practical guidance on selecting strategies was provided to overcome common challenges in developing music recommendation systems, and integrating user mood analysis into the recommendation architecture was proposed.
