Education plays a crucial role in equipping (future) researchers with the competencies (i.e. knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values) needed to adopt sustainable and equitable research practices. In this way, researchers can become environmental and societal stewards, maximising the positive impact of research on health and well-being while minimising its negative environmental and societal effects. In this chapter, we explore the importance of education for sustainability and equity in research, advocating for a holistic approach that integrates both environmental and societal dimensions. To support this transformation of research education, we discuss pedagogical strategies alongside educational activities. Additionally, we provide a list of learning objectives, illustrating how relevant topics can be integrated into curricula, including environmentally responsible research practices, evidence-based research, open science, and diversity and inclusion. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of cultivating hope and empowering learners in a time where growing awareness of global crises, such as climate change, increasingly affects mental health worldwide. Beyond curriculum changes, we emphasise the importance of broader educational factors, including the availability of elective courses and training, the culture within research groups and institutional policies and its sustainability practices (a whole-institution approach). We also provide a list of actionable steps for learners, educators and institutes to guide and accelerate transformation towards education for sustainability and equity in research. To further support this, we offer an overview of existing tools and resources, including e-learnings, guidelines, and frameworks. Finally, inspiring examples showcase how sustainability and equity can be embedded in research training.
