This framework explain one thing at three levels simultaneously. Each level arrives at the same four-part structure via a different route. (1a). Consciousness is proposed here to be the synchronous convergence of four circuits at the Layer 5 pyramidal neuron within their temporal window: a Layer 5 pyramidal recurrent loop, a central lateral thalamocortical loop, a VTA-cortical dopaminergic loop, and an ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop. (1b). Consciousness is defined as mathematics. The synchronous convergence of logic, set theory, type theory, and category theory, forming and walking a strongly connected directed graph within its temporal window. (1c). Consciousness is defined here as the capacity to produce contingent, accurate reports of currently presented information. Consciousness also defines as transforming, signal, cell, as self as content of and as its operational state as experiencing, transforming, and experiencing by the same with, and throughout its architectural state. The four loops in sequence: (1a) a Layer 5 pyramidal recurrent loop proposed to permit incidence through somatic burst firing, which requires the ascending thalamocortical signal at the basal dendrites and Loop 4's efference copy at the apical dendrites to arrive coincidentally at the soma; (1b) structurally, the seeded and configured entry node of the directed graph, the ground set by what the previous cycle's Loop 4 cedes, the position that gates what crosses into the processing cycle with no higher gate above it; the gate has a convergence shape, two inputs arriving at a single point, a form instantiated in the physical geometry of the pyramidal neuron that implements it and continuous with the convergence structure the directed graph produces at the apex; (1c) experientially, proposed to constitute the moment of entry into experience, where the arriving signal meets the anticipated form Loop 4 ceded; what crosses threshold is already shaped by what was expected, and 1c running is proposed to be the felt distinction between something and nothing; (2a) a central lateral thalamocortical loop proposed to broadcast the stored context diffusely across the full cortical workspace via matrix-type calbindin-positive projections to supragranular cortex, activating the context field within which every incident signal is contextualized; (2b) structurally, the pass-through node interior to the boundary pair, ordered before the convergence point because the context field must be globally active before deviation from it can be computed, the node that makes the arriving signal comparable by giving it a field to land in; (2c) experientially, proposed to constitute the structured potential space (the world) within which what 1c admitted can land somewhere rather than nowhere; the field has extent, shape, and position built from prior completed cycles, and Loop 2 running is proposed to be what makes the world available as receiving ground before anything arrives into it; (3a) a VTA-cortical dopaminergic loop proposed to encode the magnitude and direction of prediction error, modulate prefrontal representations into one definite weighted state via D1-mediated gain, and fire phasically at the moment of resolution, with the phasic burst encoding simultaneously when the resolution occurs, which way the deviation runs (positive or negative), and how large the deviation is; (3b) structurally, the convergence point and apex of the directed graph, the only node with in-degree three, receiving one edge from Loop 1, one edge from Loop 2, and one edge from the previous cycle's Loop 4; the only dependent node, whose bilateral function requires all three remaining nodes to have delivered their outputs before it can execute; (3c) experientially, proposed to constitute the felt present moment carrying a specific orientation and significance, simultaneously determining when (now or never), which way (the direction of the deviation, positive or negative, better or worse than expected), and how much (the magnitude of significance the deviation carries); Loop 3 running is proposed to be the determination itself, the moment when multiple possibilities become one felt reality that is oriented and weighted, this being what is, right now, going this way, mattering this much; (4a) an ACC-mediodorsal thalamic loop proposed to convert the resolved weighted state into commitment, generate an efference copy that propagates through higher-order thalamus, and project to the apical dendrites of Layer 1, relaying the prediction Loop 3 will use for resolution in the following cycle; (4b) structurally, the ceding, closing, and distributing node of the directed graph, the only node with out-degree two, simultaneously returning to the entry point of the next cycle and bridging to the convergence point of the following one; the ceding half of the boundary pair, where Loop 4 cedes what Loop 1 is seeded with; (4c) experientially, proposed to constitute the felt sense of moving into action, agency and anticipation simultaneously, drive becoming enactment, urgency and resolve as what 3c determined becomes the felt push forward into the next cycle; Four operations with three routes to each. The graph is derived from what any system that compares a signal against a record must be able to do. The circuits are characterized from experimental programs that preceded this framework. The experiential descriptions are drawn from what each circuit's disruption produces. Each route arrives at the same four-part structure. A neuron fires when three inputs converge at its soma. A node receives from every other node in the graph. A moment arrives when what was possible becomes what is. These are one event at three scales. The cycle has no outside. What it processes is what it produces. What it produces generates what it will process next. The signal is never apart from what the architecture has done to it, and the architecture is never apart from what the signal has made of it. The framework proposes there is no further fact about experience to explain beyond specifying the transformation the cycle performs. The content of a conscious state is the signal as transformed by these four operations, in this order, against this record, in this body. The record is built from this body's history of completed cycles and no other. What it is like to be this person is what it is like to have this record running this cycle in this embodiment.
