Collaborative Robots as an Entry Point for Automation in Low-Maturity Manufacturing Environments

This paper examines collaborative robots as a practical entry point for automation in low-maturity manufacturing environments. Drawing on field-based technical-commercial experience, it analyzes the structural and educational barriers that limit robotics adoption among small and medium-sized manufacturers, including lack of process standardization, high product-mix variability, limited engineering maturity, and unrealistic expectations regarding robot capabilities. The paper compares collaborative robots with conventional industrial robots, proposes a structured implementation approach based on technical visits, customer education, integrator validation, virtual simulation, and live demonstration, and argues that cobots should be evaluated as part of a broader process-readiness strategy rather than as universal solutions. The main conclusion is that collaborative robots can be highly effective as a first step toward automation when technology selection is aligned with process maturity, safety requirements, and customer readiness.
