The Elephant in the Garden A note on the integrability of a thought experiment toward To Know the Knower

This essay reads Jeffrey L. Taylor’s post-materialist synthesis not as a decisive ontological achievement but as a revealing event of observation. Its central claim is that large-scale world-explanatory constructions assembled from heterogeneous scientific, quasi-scientific, and metaphysical motifs disclose not only a proposed structure of reality, but also the observer’s internal operations of distinction, analogy, and order-production. The argument therefore shifts from first-order evaluation to second-order scrutiny: the real question is less whether such a synthesis is true than what kind of observational necessity drives its production, and at what point integrative ambition hardens into ontological overproduction. Drawing on Luhmann, Varela, Hoffman, and Friston, the essay argues that cognition offers no transparent access to being, but only selective, situated, and internally mediated forms of world-constitution. Taylor’s text is thus integrated into the horizon of To Know the Knower not as evidence of a final cosmology, but as a particularly fertile case of cosmology-producing observation. The essay’s governing thesis is that epistemic humility is not a rhetorical virtue but a methodological constraint that must also be turned against the critic’s own second-order position.
