GROWTH OF BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEMS (BRTS) IN INDIA: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Urban transport plays a significant role in the growth and development of cities in India. The increasing population and growth in vehicles have resulted in serious transport problems in India. To overcome these issues in urban transport, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) has been introduced in India. The Bus Rapid Transit System offers fast, efficient, and cost-effective public transport facilities through dedicated infrastructure and technology. In India, cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Bhopal, Jaipur, and Hubli-Dharwad have implemented BRTS to improve public transport facilities in India. The growth in public transport has resulted in reducing congestion, pollution, and travel time in India. However, in spite of its benefits, the growth in BRTS in India has been affected by certain issues in its operations and infrastructure. This research paper aims to study the growth in Bus Rapid Transit System in India and identify the opportunities and issues in the growth in Bus Rapid Transit System in India.
