Promoting gender equity and human rights in resources management: The crafting of a guidelines document for the UNFC and UNRMS frameworks of the UNECE

This article highlights the transformative journey of creating a document to address the challenges and develop a guideline document on policies to support equality and the protection of human rights in all aspects of resources management, for the Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM) of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe). The objective is to enhance the UNFC, the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), a universal system for classifying and reporting minerals, energy, and other resources globally, and in so doing, also enhance the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS) which is the comprehensive framework that integrates sustainability into global resource management practices, in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. The Women in Resource Management Working Group presents here the initial steps taken to prepare this update, pertinent to Gender Equity and Human Rights, that included a survey, the leverage of existing documents pertinent to human rights as well as women’s empowerment in resource management, and the creation of a roadmap for the preparation of the document, to be issued by 2026 in its final format, and by 2027, in its extended format.
